MR Leadership Philosophy: Students in the Marvin Ridge Leadership Program will be instructed in a way that prioritizes the growth, well-being, and empowerment of those involved. Directors and Staff aim to foster an inclusive environment that enables everyone in the organization to thrive as their authentic selves, take ownership through action, and gain valuable life experience in preparation for the workplace and beyond.

Marching Maverick Student Leadership Positions
Drum Major: The Drum Major is the most publicly visible person in the band program, and represents the entire program throughout our school and band community. This individual will be trained in conducting and extended leadership techniques, and lead the field show for the competitive season. The MRHS Drum Major is also expected to arrive early, leave later, devote time to preparation over the summer through drum major camp (Week of July 6th - 10th @Western Carolina University). Most importantly, this student is a representative of our band staff, students, school, and community.
The primary responsibilities of Drum Majors in this organization are as follows:
- To consistently demonstrate an example of the utmost excellence in the areas of personal responsibility, discipline, respect, integrity, work ethic, positive attitude, behavior and musicianship.
- To maintain open lines of communication with the Band Director and Captains to discuss goals (and how to achieve them) and problems (and how to fix them).
- To guide and direct Captains to ensure that expectations of responsibility, discipline, respect, integrity, work ethic, positive attitude, behavior and musicianship remain consistent throughout the Marching Band.
- To encourage and promote personal responsibility, discipline, respect, integrity, work ethic, positive attitude, behavior and musicianship among the band/guard membership.
Section Leader/Guard Captain: Section Leaders will be responsible for providing an excellent example for the students in their section. Leaders are expected to demonstrate and foster healthy leadership practices, lead by example and actively mentor other members on and off the field. Section Leaders will also have several additional duties as assigned by the directors, including:
- Assumes responsibility for section attendance reporting.
- Leads (or assists) their section through musical/physical warm-up routines when necessary or in the absence of their captioned staff member.
- Leads by example in showcasing proper rehearsal etiquette on and off the field.
- Assist in maintaining organization within the following areas as delegated by the drum major or director:
- Winds Storage Room
- Percussion Storage Room
- Main Band Room
- Guard Closet
Uniform Manager: The Uniform Manager is responsible for all marching uniforms, alongside the parent volunteers. This includes maintaining the organization of the uniform room, maintenance and organization of all uniform parts, distributing all uniforms on performance days, making sure that uniforms are hung properly and other uniform related duties as assigned by the director. The Uniform Manager is responsible for assembling a crew to assist him/her with all necessary tasks.
Special Events Officer: The Special Events Officer is another highly visible person that represents the band at school and public functions. This individual will work with other organizations at MRHS when the band is needed. The Special Events Officer is responsible for assisting in the planning of regular social functions, dress up days, and other events in the band program, including the band banquet.
Music Librarian: Our Music Librarian is responsible for copying and filing music as delegated by the Band Director. Music should be stored in an organized fashion throughout the season and cataloged appropriately.
Secretary: The Secretary will keep record of the season's attendance. Section leaders report attendance to the secretary at the start of each rehearsal. The secretary will also assist with drill books, field markers, and pouches.
Quartermaster: All quartermasters are responsible for all equipment for the band program. This includes instrument/equipment inventory, electronic setup for rehearsals, podium setup for rehearsals, filling water stations for practices, and other equipment related duties as assigned by the directors. Quartermasters are responsible for assembling a crew to assist him/her with all necessary duties. It is expected that the quartermasters and their teammates complete all duties outside of rehearsal time so as not to miss valuable instruction.
